History
The QPSAFC, now QPFC, was first formed in 2004, however the National Police Football Championships conducted by the APFA has been in existence for quite some time, with the traditional AFL states of Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia commencing an annual championship some 27 years ago.
Since then, Tasmania, Queensland and New South Wales have joined these championships, making it a nationwide event, with only the Australian Federal Police and the Northern Territory not currently competing.
Each year a state is selected to host the National Championships. This is done on a rotational basis.
At the end of each Championship an All Australian Team is selected. This representative side comprises the best players from each State squad. The number of players selected for each squad is dependent on where each squad finishes at the end of each championship.
The standard of competition in the national championships is extremely high, with the Victorian, South Australian, Western Australian and Tasmanian squads boasting either current or ex state players at only 1 level below AFL standard. Some of these states also boast several ex AFL players.
In 2004 the QPSAFC first hosted the National Championships in Brisbane where all the above states were represented. New South Wales only brought a small contingent of players to the Sunshine State and joined forces with South Australia. It was at this time that QPSAFC Queensland Crocs were formed and became part of this truly unique sporting event.
The Club put in an outstanding home performance in 2004 and managed to come second to Victoria in these championships. This was a fantastic effort in the inaugural year, and the team boasted 4 representatives in the 2004 All Australian side.
In 2005 the Club embarked on our first 'tour' as a state, with the National Championships held in Adelaide. With games against New South Wales, South Australia and Tasmania, the club acquitted itself well however came home without a win. Strong friendships between the squad and amongst the other state squads were formed.
The Club participated in the 2006 and 2007 Championships with improved performances but yet to come home with a win.
The 2008 championships in Melbourne were a watershed moment for the QPSAFC Crocs when history was created in finally winning our first away match as a club.
The Club managed to defeat New South Wales in a dedicated and courageous performance and exact some revenge for the loss in Hobart the previous year. By winning, the Club also for the first time legitimately got our hands on the Brett Irwin/Bob Prenter Memorial Shield
Over the years the club has formed alliances with the South Australian Police side, the Tasmanian Police side and the New South Wales Police side in the creation of the Perry Irwin/Gordon Loft Memorial Shield, the Norm Watt Memorial Shield and the Brett Irwin/Bob Prenter Memorial Shield respectively. The club has also struck a memorial award in honour of Damien Leeding.
We are extremely proud and humbled to have the permission from the family members to play as Queenslanders on behalf of these fallen colleagues who died on duty. For full details of the three shields please see the 'Memorial Shield' pages.
Over the years the Club has seen a considerable increase in interest and involvement by QPS members and the community by way of sponsorship at large. The Clubs on field results have improved and the Club has gained valuable respect on field for the other competing teams.
The Club has seen numerous changes in playing attire but the traditional Queensland Maroon remains a part. In 2013 the club changed its logo for the first time to mark the 10th year of competition and in 2014 changed to the QPFC to bring it in line with other clubs.
In 2014 the Croc's achieved 3rd spot overall at the Melbourne Carnival, again in 2015 in Perth defeating Tasmania and New South Wales all years.
2016 marked a milestone as the Croc's hosted the APFA Championships in Cairns with all teams enjoying the North Queensland hospitality. Games were played at Gazaly's Stadium with the Crocs having two wins again along with WA but third on percentage.
2017 saw the Crocs take away their biggest touring squad to Adelaide however the other teams had also recruited strongly and the team were unable to get a win at Coopers Stadium Norwood. It also ushered in a new jumper change to black and maroon and the names of all Queensland police officers killed in line of duty placed on the jumper. Many thanks to the QPUE for their kind sponsorship of this tribute to the fallen.
2018 saw the Crocs trip to the Apple Isle and with new players on board were able to win back the Irwin /Prenter Sheild from the NSW Heelers.
2019 had the Croc's touring to Canberra for the APFA Championships with hopes to win and retain our shields. This carnival showcased a Women's game and contingent to foster the possibility of a full on Women's competition in the future. The Croc's had there best ever carnival result, winning both Shields against NSW and Tasmania and making the Carnival final for the first time against Sth Australia. Zac White took out the Lewis/Allemand Medal for the carnivals best and fairest player, another first for the Croc's.
2022 was history making for the QPFC as the club welcomed the official launch of its first ever women's team at the Championships in Melbourne. As a result the QPFC took away it's largest ever contingent with a touring squad of over 50. In a great first carnival for the ladies, they won against NSW and played great footy to go down narrowly against the strong Tasmanian and Victorian teams. The Men's team made it a double with a win also against NSW and two losses. Four All Australians for the ladies and two for the men with stalwart of the club, Brad Rantall gaining APFA Life Membership.
2023 saw the QPFC head to Perth for the APFA tour with both teams enjoying the WA Hogs hospitality and playing some great football to secure wins. Trips on off days to Rottnest Island for the ladies and Fremantle for the men being enjoyed by the Croc's, and looking forward to a home carnival in Brisbane for 2024.
The Crocs have now been involved in over 18 years of National Championships and have several long time servants who have gained Club life membership as well as APFA Life membership.
The QPFC Croc's involvement in the APFA National Championships will hopefully continue well into the future.
